Nick is the managing director and a founder of Bright Purple Resourcing (formerly Careercare Computing), one of Scotland’s premier technology and finance recruitment firms. The company was formed in 1995 and has since grown to a turnover of £18.7m, although the firm is currently on track to break the £30m barrier in its next financial year.
Bright Purple were recently awarded the honour of Best Recruitment Team at the Scottish Recruitment Awards in 2010 and the firm has struck gold again in 2010, with Nick making the final of Business Leader of the Year at the National Institute of Recruitment Professionals Awards. The business has also been recognised and shortlisted in the National Business Awards, for the category Growth Strategy of the Year, where in November 2010 it will take on the likes of Camelot Group for the main prize. Nick considers this a great accolade for a small Scottish business, hopefully inspiring other Scots firms to greater things and most importantly an opportunity for his firm to learn from the big boys by taking part.
With Bright Purple providing its services to a UK client base which includes Tesco Bank, Barclays Wealth, JP Morgan, BSkyB and numerous others, Nick loves his job because it involves his passion – people.
Nick believes that all too often people underestimate just how much can be achieved if you know the right people. However he acknowleges that ‘knowing the right people’ takes times and a lot of effort. He advises that networking should always be ’win-win’ and that helping others achieve their aims as you achieve your own is critical.
As well as his day job with Bright Purple, Nick is also a board director for ScotlandIS (http://www.scotlandis.com/) the technology trade board that represents Scottish technology business and a director for the Scottish arm of The Financial Services Club (http://www.fsclub.net/).
Keen to give back where he can and appreciating his own good fortune, Nick is a keen charity supporter and in recent years has been heavily involved in raising money for the issues of homelessness, cystic fibrosis and breast cancer – he was part of the Bright Purple Paps 4 person team who recently completed the Edinburgh Moonwalk.
He lives in Central Edinburgh with Swedish wife Margita and children Jesper, Siri and Freja. As well as a taxi service to 3 teenagers at weekends, he still finds time to follow his football team in Glasgow and likes to play golf whenever he can.
Nick believes anyone can achieve their personal or business goals if they work hard enough to get there. Despite few academic qualifications, growing up in a small Welsh mining village – he has had to make his own opportunities by getting out here and making things happen.
His message is – ‘Go do it!’
